POWER THROUGH PRAYER
Power is needed to get things done. There are different kinds of powers exhibited originally by God, executed by his sons and daughters and also counterfeited by Satan. The first power we see manifesting in scriptures according to the book of revelations is the CREATIVE POWER – the power to cause what never was to appear. Another type of power is DOMINATION POWER seen also in the book of Genesis, where we see God giving Adam and Eve, and by extension the human race, the audacity to be the first and the last on issues on the earth, subduing the earth in every sense of the word. Another type of power is exhibited by Satan, called the POWER OF DEATH which he executes on those disobedient to God and the word of his grace. Nevertheless, the domination power is meant to overrule all the powers of the enemy any time any day.
Prayer, which serves as a link for humans to God, is the vital channel for perpetuating in the life of Christians the domination power they derive from Christ Jesus as the second and last Adam. Jesus said that he has given us authority to trample upon snakes and scorpion and overcome all the powers of the enemy and nothing shall hurt us. This is total domination via the power of Christ.
How to effectively express this domination power is clearly elucidated by Jesus Christ himself: He does not want us to just bear the name - Christian, but he wants us to abide in him as the Vine (us being the branches), to be able to produce the spiritual fruit of power in our lives.
Paul saw it fit to tell timothy that he (that is Timothy) has not been given the spirit of fear but the spirit of power. Even though we have been given, it is in the place of prayer and fasting that we take delivery of it. Just as Jesus himself said on an occasion when his disciples were wondering why they could not cast out a devil. He said to them that such exploit was not possible except by prayer and fasting. Meaning that even though we have the right to God’s power, we can only lay hold of it in the place of prayer, which is the place of interaction with divine majesty. As we express ourselves to God in devotional prayer, we take delivery of domination power through which we dominate on earth just as he wanted us to, at creation.
God’s word came to Daniel that those who know their God will be strong and do exploits. But how can I know God if I don’t fellowship with him? And how else can I fellowship with him except by the means of prayer? We can’t see God, but with the eyes of faith we can commune with him, interact with him, as we pray. If we do this consistently and continually, we would grow in our knowledge of the God of power and by so doing we would do abundant exploit.
The early Apostles were faced with the choice of either focusing on prayer or other activities. They chose to occupy their time with prayer. The resultant effect is that they achieved a thunderbolt of an effect in their environment through the expression of the power of God.
A crippled that was laid down at the beautiful gate of the temple was met by Peter and John as they were approaching the temple at the hour called the hour of prayer. An indication of the fact that prayer was of paramount importance to the duo and this could be linked to the effect of power that they had on the man who has been lame from birth. At age forty, this man met with the dominative power of God cancelling out his negative physical condition. Created for the man, were brand new limbs to dance and praise God with. The life of the lame man at the beautiful gate was made to exhibit the beauty of God’s creative power through people who prioritised prayer.
Peter and John definitely took their cue from the life of Jesus. We were told in various passages of scriptures of how Jesus woke up long before dawn to seclude himself for the purpose of prayer; how he prayed all night; and how he impressed on the disciples, through various teachings, the vital importance of devoting ones life to prayer.
The very life of Jesus through his practise of prayer and fasting is a life marked by stupendous amount of Power. It was said of Jesus that he was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power and that he went about doing good and healing all who are oppressed of the devil. One does not get anointed by running around doing various activities, but by staying your head before God in the place of prayer. Remember what David said that God is the one who anoints his head with oil. This occurs in the place of divine interaction – the place of prayer.
The bible (the amplified version) concludes in the book of James that the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous makes tremendous power available (dynamic in its working). In other words, we cannot become a people of power without becoming a people of prayer. The kingdom of God doesn’t work that way.
Your valuation of God is described by how much of yourself including your time that you devote to seeking him, to knowing him; and this in time will determine how much power you exhibit in your life and in turn how much impact your life will have on the earth. As we behold God with the eyes of our heart in prayer, we become transformed into the same image of power and domination that Jesus the Son of God exhibited.
Starting from now, begin to devote ample time to prayer, praying in tongues to build up yourself as God’s own power house. You don’t have to remain a spiritual weakling; you can become spiritually fortified, elevated and enlarged in the place of prayer. Let our churches become devoted to corporate praying, as exemplified by the first century church – praying, “Let your kingdom come.” When God’s kingdom comes, it comes in power and glory. No more procrastination, take on your mantle of prayer today and begin to experience more grace to pray. Stand up from your life of sin and stand more in the presence of God in prayer,
The grace to pray does not come by self effort but by the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, according to Jesus, is to be seen by us as our helper. Don’t say am not able, the Holy Spirit is not only ready but also willing to supply you with the strength and vigour you need in prayer. Don’t say I don’t know what to pray about, what you need is a listening ear, to know what God, through the Holy Spirit, wants you to pray about, that is where to focus your prayer. And where prayer is directed the power of God is also directed. The bible says that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above what we ask or imagine according to the power that is at work in us. Power is needed to get things done. When you pray, things get done because power is released. And the more you pray, the more power is released. There is power through prayer.
