THE GLORIOUS NAME OF JESUS
What’s in a name? Shakespeare, the foremost English playwright wrote (and reasonably so) that a rose by any other name would smell as good. Therefore it is the essence of a thing that gives significance or meaning to its name. The name of Jesus is the ticket into the store room of heaven. His name, which represents his person, is the key. And if the name opens a door, no one can close it; if it closes a door no one can open it.
To do a thing in the name of another is to do it not only with their approval but also as if the person is present. There is nothing that Jesus in person can do that his name when used by a proxy cannot accomplish.
The name of Jesus carries with it, the essence of Christ. And the essence of Christ includes his authority, compassion, intercession, confrontational power, and glory.
1. THE NAME OF JESUS CARRIES HIS AUTHORITY
Authority describes the right to make something happen. The name of Jesus was employed by Peter and John on a cripple; this resulted into the lifelong cripple walking again! Peter and John were wise enough to know that the only reason why the miraculous happened in the life of the cripple was by the application of the name of Jesus which carries and conveys the authority of Jesus. The authority of Jesus is the authority of the maker of the heavens and earth, the one who can remake, remold, redo, rearrange, and reorganize your life totally! When you use the name of Jesus in praying you are not playing games at all, rather you are putting to work in the here and now, the limitless authority (right to make things change) invested in the name of Jesus.
2. THE NAME OF JESUS CARRIES HIS COMPASSION
Bartholomew (in the scriptures) was blind but he concluded that he doesn’t have to continue like that, so he called on Jesus for mercy. He said, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” He called on the name of Jesus to activate the compassion, the mercy in that name so as to take delivery of the glorious riches of his mercy. Sinners are expected to call upon the name of the Lord – the name of Jesus – that they may be saved, since salvation is basically on the platform of God being merciful to man and using all his resources to bring man out of his own mess. As people call on the name of Jesus to save them from danger his eternal compassion is activated on their behalf releasing his saving grace.
3. THE NAME OF JESUS CARRIES HIS INTERCESSION
The present work of Jesus involves intercession, that is, acting as a go-between for man and God. As an intercessor, he is the means of God to man and the means of man to God. When we pray for others in the name of Jesus we are acting as his real time intercessory proxies. We thereby invoke upon ourselves the status of intercessors in Jesus’ place as his body on earth. We share his burden, his position and his authority as we employ his name in the work of intercession i.e. praying on behalf of others. Jesus is the ultimate intercessor and we as his extension (his body) help him to express and convey this aspect of himself through the use of his name in intercession.
4. THE NAME OF JESUS CARRIES HIS CONFRONTATIONAL POWER
A famous verse of scriptures seen in Philippians 2:9-11 says that Jesus has been given a name above other names and that at the name of Jesus every knee must bow and every tongue confesses that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the father. That verse implies that both the willing and the unwilling will bow to the force inherent in the name of Jesus. The name of Jesus forces the enemy to act in consonance with his subjugated position. It forces the enemy to spit out words affirming the lordship status of Jesus.
Jesus after his resurrection assures his disciples that in his name they would pick up [i.e. oppose the operation of] serpents (symbolic of satanic machinations). Paul confirms that we are in warfare and that the weapons we use are spiritually charged to pull down anything in opposition to God’s knowledge. These weapons include the name of Jesus.
John, in one of his letters, mentioned the fact that the reason for the manifestation in the flesh of God the Son - Jesus, is to destroy the works of the devil. To destroy means to render inconsequential. As explained earlier the name of Jesus can achieve whatever he can do in person because the essence of Christ is invested in the name. Therefore the name continues to destroy the works of the devil.
When Paul confronted a spirit if divination, he cast it out of a young girl with the aggressive use of the name of Jesus. Jesus’ victory on the cross, over principalities and power, is reenacted in the confrontational usage of the name of Jesus. When the name is proclaimed the enemy is pummeled.
Jesus spent a good chunk of his time on the earth casting out devils; his name when used now, activates the same power that was operational in his life, releasing it to manifest in our time and space, also casting out devils. We as believers have been licensed to use the name, since we are his body: an extension of who he is.
5. THE NAME OF JESUS CARRIES HIS GLORY
The name of Jesus is glorious since Jesus himself said that if you ask anything in his name, he would do it, to the end thatthe Father may be glorified in the Son. All the result generated from the usage of the name of Jesus brings glory to God because they are testimonies of God’s greatness. And the glory of God is released as the name of Jesus is proclaimed. This is because, as the book of Hebrews shows, Jesus is the ultimate expression of the glory of God. And as the name of Jesus is used, his person (as an expression of God’s glory) is brought to manifestation. [Glory describe the quality of divine presence and perfection]
CONCLUSION
With this understanding, you will be able to pray with a deeper sense of what the name of Jesus carries –his authority, his compassion, his intercession, his confrontational power and his glory, thereby releasing your faith in a greater measure to see the glory of God all around you. This is so that you can say just as the angels that Isaiah saw said that all the earth is full of God’s glory. Surely the name of Jesus is glorious! Don’t you agree with me?
