THE PRAYER OF FAITH
Faith means assurance that what you can’t see is more real than what you can see. Faith actually sees what is seen as an illusion that is meant to clear out once the presently assured reality comes to light. And prayer describes human verbal activities by which we communicate our desires, petition and thought to God. Putting the two definitions together, the prayer of faith therefore means prayer offered with the assurance that the request has already been granted before it is made, which means that making a demand on God’s power (in prayer) is merely a necessary formality. [Like the questions asked the bride and bridegroom on the wedding day].
The prayer of faith can be based on three reasoning which are focused on (1) the righteousness of Jesus (2) the sacrifice of Jesus and (3) the word of God.
THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF JESUS.
To make a prayer that is assured of divine response, a man or woman must know that his\her access to God and standing before him is only through the righteousness of Jesus. A parable was told by Jesus about a marriage ceremony in which guests could only enter into the house when they are clothed appropriately. The spiritual clothing by which we access the presence of God is the righteousness of Jesus. 2Cor. 5:21 is instructive for it says that God made Jesus Christ to be sin for us so that we could become the righteousness of God in Christ. Jesus is the only perfection that God can accept. And his righteousness is taken on by us by faith just like Abraham. This faith is an assurance that Jesus took on your sin so that you might take on his righteousness. By taking on Jesus’ righteousness you have the right to all God can do in response to prayer.
God would not respond to anyone or anything without smelling the sacrifice of Jesus on them, just as he smelt the burnt offering that Noah made and he turned his favour to humanity. Jesus purchased righteousness for us by the sacrifice of himself.
A prayer of faith therefore has to be made by someone who is assured of his access to God’s favour via the sacrificial death of Jesus by which Jesus took on our sin so that we might put on his righteousness (the only one that God is favourably disposed to).
As a refrain, the sacrifice Noah made to God after the world wide flood is representative of the sacrifice of Jesus. The smell of the sacrifice resulted into God’s favour (which means God’s predisposition to act positively in a given situation), in the same vein, the smell of the righteousness sacrifice of Jesus on you is the basis of the prayer of faith.
THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS.
We confidently pray the prayer of faith because we are assured that if God gave up his Son Jesus for us; nothing is beyond his means for him to do for us since he is the ultimate ruler of the heavens and the earth. We, as praying people, are in league with him in the place of prayer to bring change on the earth, into people’s lives, into churches and into nations. If God can release his son to experience death, there is therefore nothing of his that he can’t release to bless his people.
That God gave Jesus was a prediction of the fact that there is nothing of his that he won’t give us when we ask in prayer. I repeat, the sacrifice of Jesus is a sure prediction that God the almighty will extend his might to any need. There is nothing that God will give that can be greater that his son. We consequently pray the prayer of faith, knowing fully well that God is more than ready and willing to follow-up the giving of Jesus to us, by making all his resources to be at our disposal
The reason he gave his son to us was because of his love and for that same reason he would give everything to us – he makes his endless resources available to us when we pray the prayer of faith. Remember, we said that the prayer of faith is prayer that comes with an assurance that we have what we ask before we ask it even though we still have to ask as an expression of the fact that we need God. This assurance, we said earlier, is based on the righteousness of Jesus being our access, now we are saying that the sacrifice of Jesus is our guarantee for answered prayer. Keep reading.
THE WORD OF GOD.
The word of God is the constitution of his kingdom. And it outlines our entitlements. In a manner of speaking, the entitlement basis of the prayer of faith is praying the will of God as revealed by the Holy Spirit and outlined in the Bible. Jesus enjoined us to pray that God’s will be done on the earth as it is in heaven. A man of faith is a man of God’s word since God’s word is the basis of faith. To be able to pray the prayer of faith you must befriend the Word. You can be certain you will get what you want and ask, if it is covered by God’s will as outlined in his word. When we pray his will it is a forgone conclusion that he will do it for us, just as the supreme court of the nation is bound to uphold the constitution in its judgments.
SUMMARY
We access God based on the righteousness of Jesus and we are confident that God will do things for us because if he gave up his son for us, nothing is beyond his reach to give us.
Thirdly, another basis of the prayer of faith is the word of God via which our desires becomes aligned with God’s divine intentions. And by so doing, we can effectively follow the divine injunction of Jesus when he asked us to pray thus, “let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We are in no doubt of answer to prayer so we pray the prayer of faith because we know that God wants to do his will more than we want him to. In prayer God sees in us an agreeing partner on the earth. This earth he has originally given to man to rule, making it necessary for him to have someone speak forth what God’s will is, for it to stand.
CONCLUSION
If we approach God, clothed in the righteousness of Jesus by faith, and we understand that his love for us made us have his favour as revealed in the sacrifice of Jesus, and in his word we see his will which guides our praying, we are ready to pray the prayer of faith which cannot but receive positive response from God because the prayer is assured of an answer before the request is made in the first instance.
